SOME Upcoming Events

ENGAGE

Welcome to another edition of the GCC Good Things Newsletter.  Over the course of the past few weeks I have had the joy of meeting a number of you as I make my way through each school presenting the Superintendent’s Fall Presentations.  As I visit each GCC school site, I see evidence that your hard work and dedication is breathing life into the hopes and dreams of our students, their parents and others in our community.  I would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude for the abundant “good things” going on in our schools.  We are currently in the Charter renewal season for 5 of our 7 schools, and we are most excited with the hard work of the Principals and the Central Office team to pull together great documents that outlines our success and plans for the future.  We will have board meetings and public hearings over the next few weeks and months and I welcome you to come out and support our GCC schools.  Finally, your care and dedication continues to strengthen the success of our mission to provide high quality choice options within the greater Sacramento region. Thank you - each of you truly makes this a great place to work.

~ Dr. Cindy Petersen, Superintendent/CEO

EdCamps

Our first EdCamp of the school year was a resounding success!  Thank you to Chiara Brannigan and Kristin Ferderber, Lead Teachers from Futures High School for providing an informative session on Google Classroom:  Introduction & Activity Alignment w/SAMR.

GCC values the unique skills of all of our employees and we encourage everyone to sign up to conduct an EdCamp in an area of expertise.  Whether you are a teacher, administrator, paraprofessional, playground assistant, office support staff, etc. – we believe that everyone has unique skills to share with our organization.  Building stronger “system coherence” is something that GCC strives for.  We are looking forward to bringing a wide variety of EdCamps to you in 2016-2017.  For questions, or more information about EdCamps, please do not hesitate to contact jerry.kosch@gcccharters.org

Please visit the GCC Training Calendar located under the “calendar” tab at www.gcccharters.org for details about EdCamps as well as other GCC and SCOE professional development opportunities.

GCC Athletics Update
Another year of GCC athletics is upon us! The GCC soccer league will run from the middle of September until the end of October.  The GCC Elementary and Middle School soccer league is off to a great start as they begin their third week of the season.  All of the games will be played at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex on Friday afternoons from 2-5 PM - Join Us!

There will be an additional sport added this year to the GCC athletic league. In the spring the schools will be able to participate in volleyball for the first time. The schools will continue to participate in the GCC Olympics as that is a one day event but we are excited to be able to offer volleyball to all GCC schools this spring as well.

Another unique and positive athletic and character building activity schools will participate in this year is Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that works to develop social and leadership skills of girls in fourth through eighth grade through mentorship, activities, and, of course, running. The girls will participate in twice weekly sessions with a mentor and run a 5K race at the end of the year here in Sacramento.
Thanks to Adrienne Herbst for continuing to add to the opportunities for athletics for the students in the GCC. It’s going to be a great year!

Superintendent Dr. Cindy Petersen and Futures High School Principal Nataliya Burko were honored to attend the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Banquet to celebrate with our honoree – Sacramento Charter School Teacher of the Year - Futures High School teacher Crystalynn Buda.

Good Things Are HappeninG

All Across the GCC!

Recently the GCC Central Office employees gathered for a half day annual retreat to practice team building and professional development.  It was great opportunity to build everyone’s leadership skills and practice the “Capturing Kids Hearts” philosophy among their peers and colleagues.  The brainstorming activities focused on how each team member can best serve our schools.

Futures High Athletics Update

The Futures High School Knights have officially begun their fall sports season. Coach Kiana Ponce returns as the head varsity coach for the girls’ volleyball team. The lady Knights started their season with a home game against the visiting Argonaut High School. The Knights are proud to announce the addition of boys and girls cross country to their growing athletics program. Coach and Athletic Director Herbst changes gears and begins her first year as the head varsity cross country coach. In the Knights’ first meet, they were able to place in the top 50 finishers out of over 175 runners. The Knights Cross Country Team came away with a great 5th place finish at the prestigious Nevada Union High School meet. The Lady Knights volleyball team also showed their skills off as they  came away with a huge victory recently over Center High School.

Futures High School has continued to impress their opposing schools through their sportsmanship and "fight til the very end" mentality. The Knights anticipate another great year of athletics and cannot wait to share their talents with the community.

GCC Foundation Update

On September 14th and 21st, GCC Foundation Board Members with the Community Engagement Office were able to visit all of our schools.  It helped our Foundation Board to better understand our unique offerings, as well as the needs and priorities of each school.  Going to school sites and meeting with teachers, students and administrators gave Foundation Board Members a practical perspective on how to align Foundation work with each individual school.  “We need to be ambassadors for our great schools and let the community know about unique programs and services GCC has to offer," Foundation Board President, Denise Vonhof said.
